辨 析:
credit是一个常用的多义词,可以指“信用”、“信誉”、“名誉”、“功劳”、“光荣”、“成绩”、“学分”等,还可以指财务?#31995;摹?#36151;方”。“信用卡”就是credit card,“赊账”是on credit,而credit titles是“(影片开头或结尾)的导演等制作人员名单”。
含有credit的短语很多,如be a credit to somebody的意思是“某人的光荣”,如:
A bright child is often considered a credit to his parents.聪明的孩子常被认为是父母的骄傲。
do/win credit to/for...意为“为……争光”,如:
His victory won much credit for his motherland.他的胜利为祖国赢得了巨大的荣誉。
give credit to...有三个意思:
(1)“相信/信任……”,如:
We all give credit to his story.我们都相信他的话。
give credit for表示“相信某人(有某方面的才能)”,如:
I did not give you credit for such good skill.我没有想到你会有这样好的本事。
(2)“称赞”,如:
We should give credit to Marry for the correction.我们应该赞扬玛丽替我们改正错误。
(3)“把功劳归于……”,如:
They gave credit to him.他们把功劳归于他。
to one's credit有两个意思:
(1)“成为某人的光荣”,“给某人带来荣誉”,如:
It is to the king's credit that he opposed the establishment of a military government.他反对建立军人政府,替国王争了光。
He has already three novels to his credit. 他已经出了三本长篇小说了。
(2)“值得赞扬”,如:
It is to his credit that he did the job remarkably. 他的活干得很出色,应该受到表扬。
原文句首的to his credit也是这个意思,但不是原因状语,与“信用”也没有什么关系,而是对后面全句he made a thorough investigation这一事实的评论,意思是说这件事应该是他的功劳,确有其事。其实汉语的“应该说”可以表达这一层意思。全句可以译为:应该说,他进行了彻底的调查。为了表示强调,?#37096;?#20197;加上一两个字,译为:应该说,他确实进行了彻底的调查。或:应该说,是他进行了彻底的调查。
